Gwen's story

My mum Gwen's story.

Mum was just 94 when she died, or should I say murdered in a NHS hospital. The events leading up to this tragedy were totally inhumane.

Mum fell at home and was taken to hospital in 2019. The hospital refused to discharge mum home and instead sent her to a failing care home where she was to undergo rehabilitation. The home was inadequate and dangerous and later went into special measures. Mum was very traumatised by her experience there. Before the end of the supposed rehab period, I found mum a place in a care home for what was meant to have been a temporary stay. Mum was due home in the January of 2020, but Covid started and initially it was thought that mum would be best staying in the care home for another 3 months. We'd no idea how horrendous mum's experience would be. Residents were unable to socialise in the lounge and were kept in their rooms. No visitors allowed. Mum's room was small without an en-suite so being in a room less than the size of a prison cell was absolutely awful and inhumane. Because mum had gone there temporarily, she had few possessions there beyond some clothes and her mobile phone. February, March and April elapsed and mum was looking forward to coming home. Except she was prevented from doing so. Not because of not having capacity to make decisions for herself, but because social workers felt that mum needed 24/7 care. Apparently for toilet anxiety.
